Author of the Axis Ratio Method

Igor Rafael Oliveira Carneiro

Igor Rafael Oliveira Carneiro was born in Campina Grande, Brazil, and lives in João Pessoa. He is a lawyer who works mainly in intellectual property, as well as private law and advisory work in criminal matters. He earned his law degree from UNIPÊ in 2014, practiced law in Colombia, where he validated his degree through the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, and holds a postgraduate degree in Applied International Law from EBRADI. He studied Philosophy at UFPB, without finishing.

He has been developing his method of the temperaments since 2020. From that work came the Axis Ratio Method and The Book of Temperaments, which organize personality into two axes, four genera, and twelve species.

As a poet, he was a three-time finalist in the Prêmio Poetize, a national contest for new poets run by UFRJ with TV Brasil, and took third place in 2013. He is the author of ÊXODO. He is Catholic.

In the author’s words

How Axis Ratio was born

I started studying temperaments out of curiosity. I took a few courses, and they left me with more questions than answers. The explanations I found rested on symbols and elements, and none of them satisfied me. I wanted to know where the thing the symbols merely named came from, and I went looking down other roads.

I began with the authors who are references on the subject today, such as Tim LaHaye and Italo Marsili. My eyes were opened by Jerome Kagan, and the research changed direction: instead of starting from ready-made types, I began to take them apart, to look for the elements that form them, and to rebuild from there.

Over time, I developed a relatively stable way of perceiving a person’s temperament. I began observing different people and comparing those of the same temperament with one another, separating what was common from what changed, so as to understand the reason for each thing afterward. It was in that work that it became clear the real configurations were twelve. That is how Axis Ratio was born.

When I found the explanation I was looking for, I understood that it was no longer mine alone. I took this knowledge as a personal responsibility: whoever receives what they did not know they were asking for becomes answerable for it. The Book of Temperaments is the public form of that answer.

Working principles

Consistency of concepts

Each term of the method has its own definition and is always used in the same sense, from the chapter on temperament to the twelve species.

Attention to the concrete person

Temperament is structure, but the person is more than that: history, habits, circumstances, and freedom take part in how it is expressed.

Distinguishing sources from hypotheses

The work separates what comes from tradition, what comes from published research, and what is the method’s own elaboration.

Responsible use

The method serves understanding and formation. It is not a clinical diagnosis or a moral label on anyone.
